As you turn off from Argwings Kodhek Road and drive up Rose Avenue, an urban building with multiple terraces towering over its neighbours will catch your eye. Monarch Hotel, which could easily pass off as swanky office suites is smack dab in the middle of the residential Kilimani area. A commercial hub in the outskirts of Nairobi which boasts renown shopping malls, hotels and restaurants. I’m heading there to sample their services on invitation.
Let me start from the beginning. I was looking for conference facilities in Nairobi and made a list. I then set about the usual tonne of calls and e-mail ping pong as we haggled over prices. The list became shorter and Monarch Hotel was in there. I hadn’t heard much about it and their social media accounts had little I could compare to. So I made the call eventually and they sent a quotation, fairly priced I must say. I was still chasing better deals elsewhere when they called to follow-up. That was a win for me. I mean. 🙂
We set a date. They sent a driver. My plus one backed out at the last minute and so off we went.
In a brief guided tour I was shown the conference hall, which had up-to-date equipment and adequate space to hold a large crowd. The smaller meeting rooms could accommodate small delegations and more intimate sessions. The gym which looked cramped to me with the heavy machinery and small area to squeeze in through.
The lounge area had a breezy feel to it. The area was roomy, clean and vibrant and ideal for lounging around on a sunny afternoon.
The accommodation facilities were immaculate. The bar was well-stocked and neatly-organised. The spreads were a dull orange colour and the double rooms seemed small.
And finally the dining area. I was most impressed by it. And not because of the aroma of food was clouding my judgement. Hehehe. The layout was perfect and the adjoining terrace was such a relief to go to.
I chose a rice dish with baked potato wedges, fish fillet and sour tartar sauce which was well cooked, artfully-served and delicious of course. All in all it was a great experience.
THUMBS UP 🙂 🙂
Friendly personnel. Everyone was helpful and smiled when serving you.
The hotel was clean, well-put together and efficiently run.
THUMBS DOWN. 🙁 🙁
The corridors were narrow. I was imagining a situation where many people would be walking around or going into the conference hall and the disaster it would be.
The small gym.
BITS AND PIECES.
I highly recommend it to you guys.
Linda, one of the managers at the hotel was my guide for the afternoon and she did it with so much grace.
I checked other people’s comments on Trip Advisor and they ranked quite highly. One gentleman said the thing that impressed him most was the rump they had for physically challenged guests. Another complained about being set up in a smoky room.
I would recommend it highly to both local and international guests.
